HOCKEY SERIES WON BY YALE.
The Columbia Game-Yale to Play
Queens—A Review of the Season.
The Yale Hockey team defeated the
Columbia Hockey team at St. Nicholas
Rink, New York, March 6, by the score
of 6 to 4, thereby winning the intercol-
legiate series. In the first half of the
game Columbia was unable to score
while Yale made three points, two by
Bronson and one by Inman on Camp-
bell’s passes. In the second half Co-
lumbia showed an improvement but Yale
held her lead easily. In this half Coxe
scored one of the most sensational goals
ever seen in the rink, by lifting the puck
almost the whole length of the ice.
In the course of a week or so it is
hoped that the arrangements will be
completed for a game with the Queen’s
Club of Canada for international
honors in hockey. The game would be
played in New York and would be fol-
lowed by an all-college match with
Queens the next night.
The Hockey team, by defeating Co-
lumbia, closed the season of intercol-
legiate matches with a clean score, and,
by beating Harvard in a friendly game
February 26, further brightened the
record. In the light of the consistent
work of the season, this year’s team can
be said to be one of the best, perhaps
the best, that ever represented Yale in
this sport of growing importance. At
first there were many faults, but as the
season advanced Captain Campbell got
his men working smoothly together by
paying attention to the niceties of team
play. A style of defense was developed
which was very hard to break. By it
Yale kept her opponents from counting
and depended for her own scoring on
her unusually strong and fast forwards.
The first four practice games with
strong New York and Brooklyn clubs
were lost, as the men had had no prac-
tice whatever, but the Pittsburg trip in
the Christmas vacation resulted in three
games won and one lost, a record which
the Queen’s team of Canada playing
the same strong teams, could not equal
a little later in the season. The fine
play against the teams of Columbia,
Princeton, Brown, and in the one game
with Harvard, was due largely to the
experience gained in the games with the
Pennsylvanians. The line is considered
one of the strongest and fastest in the
country.
