While Mr. Hickok was ill with congestion of the lungs, Battery A was mustered into ser- vice and he lost his place. He then communicated with Colonel Roosevelt Ky., on account of his recent illness and spent the three following weeks near there on a stock farm recuperating, again joining Battery A, which was then guarding the ship yards at New- port News, Va., the Rough Riders in the meantime having sailed from Tampa for Cuba.
