Dr. Hills was married in 1848 to Miss
Caroline M. Sutton of New York City,
who survives him with three sons and
two daughters.
ELISHA WHITTLESEY, ’50T.S.
The Rev. Elisha Whittlesey died in
Farmington, Conn., Saturday morning,
February 19. Death was due to the
infirmities of age. Mr. Whittelsey
was born in Salisbury, Conn., 76 years
ago. He was ordained in the Congre-
gational church and had been pastor of
the Congregational church in North
Canaan, Conn., the Second Congrega-
tional church, Waterbury, Conn., and
of the Le Roy, N. Y., Presbyterian
church. About 1872 he entered the
ministry of the Episcopal church. He
married Miss A. C. Cowles, daughter of
the late Rev. Pitkin Cowles, Yale
1800, who survives him. Three chil-
dren also survive him.
LEWIS W. SCHAFFER, 776.
Lewis William Schaffer died at his
home in Cincinnati, Ohio, February 7,
1898. He was born at Cincinnati, No-
vember 9, 1854. He was prepared for
v-. e at the Chickering Academy,
Cincinnati, and was graduated from
Yale in the Class of 1876. After gradu-
ation Mr. Schaffer went into the pork-
packing and commission business in
Cincinnati. In November 1886 he re-
moved to Oxmoor, Alabama, and en-
gaged in mining iron ore. In Febru-
ary 1891 he moved to Woodward, Ala.,
an .,held, for a time, the position of
Secretary of the Woodward Iron Com-
pany. At the time of his death he was
general manager of the Blue Ridge
Company, marble dealers, of Cincin-
nati. He married Miss Sallie R. Smith
of Cincinnati, a sister of Rufus Biggs

The annual banquet of the Yale
A\umni Association of Eastern New
York will be held at the Fort Orange
Club, A-bany, N. Y., on the 15th of
March. The committee in charge of
the affair consists of Lieut. Governor
Timothy L. Woodruff, ’79; James W.

Charles T. Durant, ’87, and Col. George
Curtis Treadwell, ’°93 S. A number of
prominent Yale alumni will be invited
to speak, and it is hoped that Judge
Henry E. Howland, 754, of New York
City, and Prof, Arthur ¢.-iadiey, “76,
of the Faculty, will be among the chief
speakers. A quartet from the Uni-
versitv Glee Club has been invited to
be present and a uniaue program has
been arranged.

Third Maryland Banquet.
The third annual banquet of the
Yale Alumni Association of Maryland
took place at the St. James Hotel, Bal-
timore, on Thursday, February 17. At
the business meeting preceding the
banquet the following officers were

The singing was led by a quartet com-
posed of George S. Drake, Jr., 07, -
Edward S. Hume, ’97, Harry W. Carey,
’97, and Theodore Lamson, ’97S., and
was very spirited. The greatest feeling
of good fellowship prevailed. Yale
flags were hung around the banquet
room, Yale ribbons decked the tables,
which were further decorated with
white carnations and smilax.
Letters of regret were read from Pres.
Dwight, with whose photograph the
menu cards were adorned, and Gover-
nor Lloyd Lowndes. Toasts were re-

Hudson County Banquet.
The first annual banquet of the Hud-
son County University Club was held
at the Hotel Washington, Jersey City,
N. J., on February 15th. The Com-
mittee in charge was O. R. Blanchard,
M.D., (Lafayette, ’80); Manning F.
Stires, Jr., (Yale, ’97), and W. Patter-
son Atkinson, (Princeton, ’89). Nearly
hundred graduates of ten different Col-
leges sat down to the banquet. The
menu card, written by H. C. Wait,
(Yale, 76), was in Latin as were also
two songs on the back of the toast list.

Final Trials, Princeton Debate.
The final trials to choose the debaters -
who will represent Yale in the annual
contest with Princeton, were held last
Saturday, February 20.
Of the fifteen men who qualified for
the final trials, five were chosen, as fol-

The subject of the debate was,
“Resolved, That national party lines
should be disregarded in the choice of
the councils and administrative officers
of American cities,’ which is the one
that will be discussed, on March 23,
with Princeton. The judges were Pro-
fessor A. T. Hadley, Professor Wurts
and Professor G. B. Adams.
B. C. Smith, ’o9, of East Orange, N.
J., was awarded the Thatcher Prize of
seventy-five dollars, which is given for
the best speaking by a member of the
Academic Department in this debate.
George H. Frazier, a graduate of
University of Pennsylvania, has offered
an annual prize of one hundred dollars
to that member of the Pennsylvania
crew, footbal team, baseball team or
track team who gets the highest stand
in his studies.
On March 3d, Brown University will
give a physical exhibition, the first of
its kind ever held in the American col-
lege world. All the different phases of
athletic training will be exhibited, and
it is expected that fully seven hundred
students will be on the floor at the same
time. Gov. Elisha Dyer and President
Andrews will deliver addresses.
